Most adults don’t struggle because they can’t learn Spanish. They struggle because they spend a long time studying the language without enough opportunities to actually use it. Many of our students come to us after taking classes elsewhere, using language apps or studying from textbooks. They often know vocabulary and grammar, but when it’s time to have a real conversation, they don’t know how to put everything together.

After more than twelve years teaching English-speaking adults in Mexico, we gradually changed the way we teach. Instead of asking students to memorize large amounts of grammar before speaking, we focus first on helping them communicate. Pronunciation, sentence structure and conversation become the foundation on which everything else is built.

Pronunciation plays an important role throughout the program. We believe that understanding the sounds of the language makes speaking, listening and remembering new structures much easier. Good pronunciation isn’t about sounding perfect; it’s about communicating clearly and feeling more confident during conversations.

Another important part of our teaching method is learning through complete ideas instead of isolated words. Vocabulary is always introduced inside useful sentences and realistic situations, allowing students to understand not only what a word means, but also how it is naturally used. As the program progresses, those same sentence patterns become the foundation for more advanced conversations.

Grammar is certainly important, but we introduce it gradually. Rather than trying to explain every rule at once, each level adds a small number of new concepts that students immediately begin using in conversation. Sometimes we even postpone certain grammar topics so students can spend more time speaking and listening before learning the terminology behind what they are already using.

We also create our own learning materials. Instead of following a commercial textbook, every lesson, worksheet, audio exercise and practice activity has been developed by our team after years of teaching students who live in, travel through or frequently visit Mexico. This allows us to focus on vocabulary, expressions and situations that students are much more likely to encounter in everyday life.

Although Spanish is spoken in many countries, our program focuses on the variety of Spanish commonly used and heard in Mexico. If your goal is to travel, live or communicate with people in Mexico, you’ll be learning vocabulary and expressions that naturally fit that context.

Whether you study independently through the Toani Membership or decide to join one of our live classes with a teacher, you’ll be following the same learning system and using the same materials. The difference is simply the amount of guidance you receive along the way. Some students enjoy progressing at their own pace, while others prefer the support and interaction that comes from learning with a teacher and a small group.

Our goal has never been to create students who know the most grammar. Our goal is to help people feel comfortable having real conversations in Spanish, one step at a time.
