Level 5 Advanced Tenses
Level 5 brings together everything you have learned throughout the program. Instead of learning isolated grammar topics, you begin seeing how the different verb tenses work together and when each one communicates a different idea.
During this level, you'll review the structures you already know while adding new ones such as the present perfect, past perfect, future, conditional, imperative and present subjunctive.
The goal is not to memorize more conjugation charts. The goal is to understand what each tense communicates so you can choose the one that best matches what you want to say.
If you are not sure whether Level 5 is the right place to begin, you can complete our online level assessment before joining the program.
Course content
Throughout Level 5, each tense is introduced individually before comparing it with the others. Little by little, you begin seeing the complete picture of how Spanish expresses time, possibility, recommendations and future events.
By the end of this level, you will have practiced:
- reviewing present, preterite and imperfect;
- using the present perfect to talk about experiences and recent events;
- using the past perfect to describe actions that happened before another event;
- using the future tense to talk about plans, predictions and future situations;
- using the conditional to make recommendations and talk about hypothetical situations;
- using the imperative to give directions, instructions and commands;
- beginning to use the present subjunctive in practical situations;
- comparing several tenses and choosing the one that communicates your idea more clearly.
Connecting the whole system
One of the biggest goals of Level 5 is helping you understand how all these tenses relate to one another. Instead of seeing them as separate grammar topics, you'll begin recognizing when each one is naturally used during conversation.
Communicating more naturally
Each new structure is introduced through everyday situations. You practice describing experiences, making plans, giving advice, explaining possibilities, giving directions and expressing opinions using complete sentences.
Conversation first
As in every level of the Toani Program, grammar supports communication. Every tense is practiced inside conversations rather than as isolated conjugation exercises.
How the course works
Level 5 follows the same learning sequence used throughout the Toani Program.
You study one tense at a time through guided lessons, pronunciation practice, listening activities and conversation exercises. Later, those same structures return in comparison activities that help you understand when each tense is appropriate.
The repetition is intentional. Instead of memorizing isolated rules, you gradually develop confidence choosing the right tense while communicating complete ideas.
If you are taking Level 5 with a teacher, we'll tell you what to do each week as the class moves forward.
If you are studying independently, the lessons remain organized in sequence so you always know what comes next.

What happens after Level 5?
Completing Level 5 means you have worked through the core structure of the Toani Program and have practiced the main verb tenses used in everyday Spanish.
From here, the focus shifts from learning new grammar to becoming more comfortable using everything you already know.
Many students continue practicing in our weekly Conversation Club on Zoom, where they strengthen fluency through guided conversations with other learners. Others continue with advanced courses as they become available.
Your Toani Membership gives you continued access to the learning materials, so you can return to previous lessons whenever you need to review.
