Level 1 Foundation Course

Level 1 Foundation Course

Level 1 is the starting point for complete beginners and for students who know some Spanish but still have difficulty building complete sentences.

You begin with pronunciation and simple sentence structure. Instead of waiting until you have memorized a long list of verb conjugations, you learn how to combine common verbs and phrases so you can begin expressing complete ideas from the beginning.

This level may also be useful if you have studied Spanish before but want to strengthen the basics, improve your pronunciation or understand how the Toani Program organizes sentence structure.

If you are not sure whether Level 1 is the right starting point, you can complete our online level assessment before you begin.

Course content

In Level 1, you learn how to build useful sentences with common verbs and expressions. The vocabulary is introduced inside complete examples so you can understand how the words work together.

By the end of this level, you will have practiced:

  • how to use our pronunciation technique, including blending, linking and connected sounds;
  • how to start and finish short conversations with common everyday expressions;
  • how to express what you need, want, can do and have to do;
  • how to talk about future plans using ir a + infinitive;
  • how to ask for things and formulate useful questions;
  • how to use common verbs inside complete sentences;
  • how to communicate in restaurants, stores and other everyday situations;
  • and an introduction to present-tense conjugation.

Pronunciation

Pronunciation is introduced from the beginning because speaking and listening are closely connected. You practice complete phrases aloud and learn how sounds connect when Spanish is spoken naturally.

The goal is not to imitate one perfect accent. The goal is to make your Spanish easier to understand and to help you recognize familiar words when you hear them in real conversations.

Vocabulary used in Mexico

The course uses common words and expressions used and heard in Mexico. You learn vocabulary in context instead of memorizing long lists of isolated words.

This helps you recognize the same language when you hear it in restaurants, stores, social situations and everyday conversations.

How the course works

The course follows a clear sequence. Each lesson introduces a small group of words, sentence structures and pronunciation patterns. Those same elements return in later activities so you can hear them again, pronounce them and use them in different situations.

You first review the lesson and examples. You then practice with audio exercises, short activities and quizzes. The repetition is intentional: the purpose is to make the vocabulary and sentence structure easier to recognize and retrieve when you need them.

You can complete the course at your own pace. If you are taking Level 1 with a teacher, we’ll tell you what to do each week as the class moves forward.

If you are studying independently, the lessons remain organized in sequence so you always know what comes next.

What happens after Level 1?

After Level 1, you will have a clearer base for building complete sentences, asking useful questions and talking about simple plans and everyday needs.

In Level 2, you begin working more directly with present-tense conjugations. You use them together with the sentence structures and common phrases introduced in Level 1.

This allows you to talk in more detail about your routines, work, family, interests and everyday activities.

Level 2 is already included with your Toani Membership, so you can continue when you are ready.
